During your regular cleaning appointments for preventative care (we suggest having a cleaning every six months), we make it our priority to help you maintain the best possible dental health. In addition to an examination by Dr. Welch, our dental hygienists provide preventative dentistry techniques to help stop cavities and other unwanted oral health problems by thoroughly cleaning your teeth and gums. During regular cleanings and checkups, we concentrate on checking for periodontal (gum) disease, cavities and bite problems. |

Gum disease (periodontal disease) is a bacterial infection that can be easily treated if identified at its early stages. Gum disease can be caused by an excessive build up of plaque, changes in metabolism or hormone levels, or even medical conditions (such as diabetes or kidney conditions). If left untreated, gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss. Persistent bad breath, loose teeth, inflamed or sensitive gums, or gums that bleed easily are warning signs that you may have gum disease. Please let us know if you are having any of these issues when you come in for your regular visits. |

When the pulp of a tooth becomes infected or diseased, it is important to remove the infected tissue from the interior of the tooth in order to avoid permanent removal. During a root canal, diseased root tissue is removed, the area is cleaned and the tissue is replaced with an antibacterial filling. It is highly recommended that the tooth is then capped or crowned for protection. Root canal therapy saves an average of 17 million teeth each year. |

Dental crowns or “caps” are placed over weak or damaged teeth to help protect them from further harm and improve their appearance. In most cases, a crown will follow a root canal procedure to help protect the tooth. Crowns are typically completed in two visits, and a temporary crown will be put into place while your permanent crown is being fabricated. Crowns are strong and durable, and they cover and protect your tooth. There are several types of crowns and Dr. Welch can help you determine the best option for you.

We help patients improve their smiles by offering the option of veneers to help change the appearance of
discolored, broken, uneven or otherwise unattractive teeth. A veneer is a thin coat of porcelain that is bonded to the teeth to help improve color or shape. A patient’s teeth are contoured and an impression of the teeth is made. Next, the veneers are tested and bonded into place. Not only are veneers esthetically pleasing, but they can also provide protection to the tooth’s surface. Veneers can greatly improve the appearance of teeth and give patients
the confidence to smile again. |

Implants are one of the most durable and effective ways to treat missing teeth. Dental implants are artificial tooth root replacements that compensate for tooth loss. They have at least a 90 percent success rate, and the results are permanent. Keys to success include healthy gums and an adequate bone structure to support the implant. Missing teeth can cause problems with eating, bone loss and tooth alignment, and may even make many patients feel self-conscious when smiling or speaking. Implants are one option for patients looking to correct their tooth
loss. |

If you have Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Syndrome, you are likely experiencing jaw popping/clicking, face and head pain, and difficulty biting, as well as jaw stiffness and earaches. TMJ is usually caused by trauma to the jaw, repetitive clenching of the jaw muscles and grinding the teeth, or misalignment of the teeth. Many TMJ cases are temporary if you rest and relax your jaw, giving it time to heal. However, for cases that last more than a few weeks, you may need a specially molded mouthguard or –in the worst cases – surgery to get rid of painful TMJ symptoms. |
